Appriss provides data and analytics solutions to address risk, fraud, security, safety and compliance issues for government and commercial enterprises around the world. The employees behind these solutions are technology and data science experts who share a passion for solving complex problems affecting society and businesses.
While tech helps drive the products the company offers, it’s guided by the knowledge and inspiration of its employees. The same is true when it comes to their wellness programs.
Alden Pennington, Vice President of Human Resources, notes that his department has one theme — to serve as a “concierge service for top talent,” and says the focus is on providing a highly flexible work environment that encourages creativity and productivity and allows employees to have a positive work/life balance.
This emphasis on employee well-being and job satisfaction comes from the top, explains Pennington. The company’s core values of integrity, customer focus, accountability, respect and excellence (ICARE) stem from CEO Mike Davis’s vision for the company and its employees.
Simplifying healthcare access
Health, dental, vision and life insurance are all part of the Appriss benefits package, but the company takes it one step further. There’s a free on-site clinic at their Louisville headquarters to make it easy for employees to visit a doctor at any time during their work day, and most generic prescriptions are free as well.
No matter where they are on the wellness spectrum, or what health conditions they’re managing, employees also can work with clinic staff to develop a customized wellness plan and integrate it into their daily lives.
Supporting employee activities
Total Rewards Analyst Ashley Presnell helps design and implement the employee benefits at Apriss and she says her efforts are shaped by the diverse interests of their employees with the primary goal of “helping them to be healthy and happy.”
“If an employee belongs to a fitness center, we provide reimbursement toward their membership fees,” says Presnell, “but we also sponsor a wide range of employee-driven activities.”
Whether it’s cycling, running, walking or other events, Presnell says an employee can request sponsorship or simply turn in a receipt to be compensated for entry fees. “We also support groups of employees, helping to develop rowing, cycling and other activity clubs and sponsoring their teams.”
Providing the perks
There are a number of other ways Appriss strives to keep its top talent happy at work and in the work they do. “We provide ergonomic chairs and desks in the office and the latest in remote technology so employees can work from home or collaborate with colleagues in other offices,” says Pennington.
With the company’s focus on creating a results-oriented work environment, it also offers the ultimate in schedule flexibility. The majority of Appriss employees are eligible to participate, allowing them to meet their work commitments and take unlimited time off. Presnell notes that they have paternity and maternity leave as well, so both parents can take the time they need to focus on their new or growing family.
Appriss also supports the personal and professional growth of their employees with tuition reimbursement, a benefit that offers up to $4,000 per year for additional education, and they give a 4 percent matching contribution to 401K accounts to help employees even after they retire.
And then there’s the fun side of working at Appriss. Employees can take advantage of visits from food and coffee trucks, celebrate company-wide events, and get together for outings. “In addition to our other special activities, we host an annual fall party for our employees with food and live music for employees to enjoy,” Pennington adds. “No expense is spared.”
The employee-driven culture at Appriss has been recognized the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management, with Appriss earning a spot on 2018 winner’s list of the “Best Places to Work in Kentucky.” And it isn’t the first time. Appriss has qualified for this honor seven times since its inception.
